Rock ’n’ Roll Heaven: Remembering Steven's love for music

Steven decided he wanted to learn to play the guitar around the age of 13. I used to sit and watch him practice, amazed by his natural ability. It made me want to learn to play, so I started taking lessons. I would ask him for help when I was having trouble learning something new. He didn’t seem to mind teaching me. Instead, he was always encouraging me. We sure had some great “jam sessions” in our basement.

Steven played in a band, and I rarely missed a show. I would help with the sound system and record his performances. Eventually, I started playing in my own band. He would come and help out with my shows too. At most of our events, whichever one of us was on stage would call the other one up to play a song or two together. It was always the highlight of the night for me. Those are some of my fondest memories.

When I was ready to upgrade to a nicer guitar, I asked Steven to go with me to help pick it out. He was very busy with school and work, but he managed to make time to meet me at the store. It was very important for me to have Steven’s input on the purchase. Not only did I respect his opinion as a musician, but I wanted him to like the guitar I chose.  I remember telling him, “I want you to like it too. It will be yours one day when I’m gone.”  I would have never imagined that it would be the other way around. That Steven would be the one leaving his guitars to me.

I am so grateful that music gave me a reason to spend extra time with Steven. Although we are approaching the five year anniversary of Steven’s passing on March 12th, the memories of playing music together are still fresh in my mind. And I know, without a doubt, we will jam together again one day.
